 Quest the First…

Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time II criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres.

Book 2:  Sorcerey & Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot  by: Patricia C Wrede & Caroline Stevermer

Hardcover: 336 pages
ISBN-10: 0152046151

Amazon: Product Description
A great deal is happening in London this season.
For starters, there’s the witch who tried to poison Kate at Sir Hilary’s induction into the Royal College of Wizards. (Since when does hot chocolate burn a hole straight through one’s dress?!)
Then there’s Dorothea. Is it a spell that’s made her the toast of the town–or could it possibly have something to do with the charm-bag under Oliver’s bed?
And speaking of Oliver, just how long can Cecelia and Kate make excuses for him? Ever since he was turned into a tree, he hasn’t bothered to tell anyone where he is!
The girls might think it all a magical nightmare . . . if only they weren’t having so much fun.

Card catalog description
In 1817 in England, two young cousins, Cecilia living in the country and Kate in London, write letters to keep each other informed of their exploits, which take a sinister turn when they find themselves confronted by evil wizards.

I read someone’s review of this and I can’t say I am sure what it was about it that made me buy it .. but I did.

What a pleasant surprise this book was!!  Totally enjoyed it!

As I began reading I had the feeling I had found personal letters and I was being nosey and reading them ! lol.. then I got hooked!  Fast!

There are no real “chapters” in this book.. just these letters that go back and forth between best girlfriends who are cousins.

In the 1800’s in England a young lady “comes out” and actively searches for a potential husband. (if you ever read or saw the movie Sense and Sensibility you will get the connection right a way).  One cousin is in London  and one out in the country as they correspond on how one sister or another is doing in “popularity”.

While meeting all these “potential men”  they become involved with some magicians and some nasty magic is going on…

It’s hysterical that I found I could hardly put this book down lol.  You find you have to “readthe next letter to see the response”.. and so it goes, back and forth and back and forth, and before you know it.. you’ve read the whole book!

It’s not a big book, and as you can tell.. it’s a rather fast read. (especially if you are nosey and just have to read the next  letter!)

This was certainly an enjoyable book !  A fun version of coming of age in England in the 1800’s plus a bit of a magical mystery involved to keep you on your toes, and it all comes to an exciting ending!

Whenever I enjoy a book I go back and look up the author/ authors to see what else they have written… *smacking m’hed”.. sure enough.. there are followup books !

“The Grand Tour: Being a Revelation of Matters of High Confidentiality and Greatest Importance, Including Extracts from the Intimate Diary of a Noblewoman and the Sworn Testimony of a Lady of Quality” … who could resist a title like that?.. so I sent for it !

and: “The Mislaid Magician or Ten Years After” ..and sent for this.. sheesh. may as well read them all!

Hellboy II…

yet another movie I am looking forward to…
You can see the newest trailer “here”.

The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so as Hellboy and his team returns they must save the world from the rebellious creatures. Now, as the creatures who inhabit the spiritual realm gear-up for an all out attack on the human plane, the only one capable of saving the Earth is a tough-talking hellspawn rejected by both worlds. Written by Anthony Pereyra

Ron Perlman …  Hellboy (what can I say?  I’ve admired and enjoyed Ron Perlman since “the old days” of  Beauty and the Beast!)

Selma Blair …  Liz Sherman

Doug Jones …  Abe Sapien / The Chamberlain / The Angel of Death

 James Dodd …  Johann Krauss

John Alexander …  Johann Kraus / Goblin

 Luke Goss …  Prince Nuada

Seth MacFarlane …  Johann Kraus (voice)

John Hurt …  Trevor ‘Broom’ Bruttenholm

 Jeffrey Tambor …  Tom Manning

 Anna Walton …  Princess Nuala

Brian Steele …  Troll / Mr. Wink / Map Shop Owner / Fragglewump

 Roy Dotrice …  King Balor

(yes! Roy co-starred with Ron Perlman in Beauty and the Beast!!)

 Jamie Wilson …  Cat Vendor

 Ferenc Elek …  Angry Neighbour

Oliver Simor …  Agent Gold / Manning Agent

 Brian Herring …  Silkard-Fish Vendor

Below is Ron “as he is”…  and I have to tell you about the one time I saw him at a convention.. it was in NY and I was there to see DeForest.  This was a big convention of SciFi/ Fantasy and so it had many guests.  One was Ron Perlman.  Ron was to do what all the guests do, which is to be on stage for about an hour.  Give a little talk and then open the floor to questions and answers.  Well…….. Ron did this.  He also stayed on stage for not one hour but TWO hours until he answered every possible question anyone could ask!!  He was a really nice person and went overboard for the fans.  I wouldn’t mind seeing him again at a convention, but I doubt that he does them anymore.  The old convention that I saw him at,  he was still doing them for his role as Vincent in Beauty and the Beast.. it had gotten (and still has) a large fan base.

I’m glad that he is now making many new fans for his part as Hellboy.  He’s worked hard and deserves all the accolades he can get.

 Quest the First…

Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time II criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres.

Book 1:  Runemarks by Joanne Harris

Hardcover: 544 pages
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers (January 8, 2008)
ISBN-10: 0375844449

Amazon Product Description

Seven o’clock on a Monday morning, five hundred years after the end of the world, and goblins had been at the cellar again. . . . Not that anyone would admit it was goblins. In Maddy Smith’s world, order rules. Chaos, old gods, fairies, goblins, magic, glamours–all of these were supposedly vanquished centuries ago. But Maddy knows that a small bit of magic has survived. The “ruinmark” she was born with on her palm proves it–and makes the other villagers fearful that she is a witch (though helpful in dealing with the goblins-in-the-cellar problem). But the mysterious traveler One-Eye sees Maddy’s mark not as a defect, but as a destiny. And Maddy will need every scrap of forbidden magic One-Eye can teach her if she is to survive that destiny.

I read this review and thought I would like the book.  I mean, it had plenty of things I’ve enjoyed before.  Old Gods, fairies, goblins, magic.. it seemed logical.  When I began the book it seemed... fairly good.  So of course I kept reading.  Then at times I found it… boring, but I read on.

I don’t know what it was about this book that wasn’t grabbing me.  I hope it just wasn’t my mood, and in all honesty, it could have been.  I read on.

I read 369 pages out of 544 and decided, I just was not enjoying this book.  And I can’t really pin point why.

I am going to say that the story itself just wasn’t my thing I guess.  But I do think others might enjoy this book.  It wasn’t awful, it just wasn’t my thing.

There really wasn’t much in the way of fairies and goblins..least not it the “classic way”.  Any magic surrounded Runes (which of course makes since, hence the title..duh) And like I said, I do think others will like this book.

I just decided I had given it a good shot and it was time to move on…

May 22nd

That’s the date for the opening of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I cannot wait for this movie!…  the hat!  the whip !   the grubby pants!.. all of it that makes Harrison Ford look so damn good!

With all the talk of Harrison’s “age”.. all I have to say when I look at the next poster is:  “Bring it on!”

Lookin‘ good Indy!…

This next poster I will have to find and add to my collection, even though all my posters remain in tubes..  Just can’t beat Drew Struzan when it comes to Indiana Jones!  He manages to capture everything that’s wonderful about Indy!

Below is the “theater ad..”

Next is a teaser poster… I would love to find this one!!

 (oh woof!)

Predictably, the powers that be (Paramount and the Great Bearded Ones) have decided to release another edition of the Indiana Jones pictures on DVD in the feverish days leading up to the release of what will undoubtedly be the greatest film of 2008.  This can come as no great surprise to anyone, can it??  heh.

As fantastic as all the new posters are I think my favorite of all the Indy posters will always be this one…

… Others may talk as they will, about Harrison’s age concerning this movie.. but he is,  one of the last “old time” actors.  By that I mean NOTHING about his age!  Just that he is one of the best actors around in the “old tradition” of actors.  He can do anything and pull it off with style.. he’s an actor’s actor.

Harrison Ford will always make me want to go see his movies… no matter what they are about.. or how “old” he gets.

Thank you Harrison, for making this movie.  It’s not even released and I can tell you I will love this movie… there’s no doubt in my mind!

Relief is just a haircut away…

  Before summer Hair Cut

  After Hair Cut

  Before Hair Cut

  After Hair cut

To me they look pretty silly… but they both have taken to strutting around and wanting everyone to give them belly rubs now!   And by the end of the summer their fur has grown back.

I’m sure after a few days I’ll stop grinning at how silly they look!  heh.  (but then again if it only took a haircut to get back rubs I’d be sorely tempted!)

Wow, like.. when did I finally do something right that I am getting awards???? :o)

Karen over at Outpost Mâvarin has give me an “E for Excellent” award!

I doubt highly that I have anything near an “excellent blog” but it is nice to know some people like it!    I have been reading Karen’s blog from the beginning when I discovered AOL had journals.. that was before I moved my blog to Blogspot !  (long time ago)  They are duplicate journals.. better known as “having a back up just in case”.  :o)   Karen has the honor of being known as collecting weird things… he home being a “museum of the weird”… I think she also collects “old bloggers”.. heck why not?! hehehe.

Thank you so much Karen!!  I know I am supposed to pass this on .. just not sure how to do it, because every blog on my lists I feel this way about, or they wouldn’t be on my list of  blogs!

Oh.. and just a note on something else not related…

I never really talk politics, and this is not saying anything good or bad about anyone,   but this popped up on my aol “news” as I logged on and I nearly spit laughing…

did anyone notice in the written news that  Obama’s preacher is now listed as his EXpreacher?  *laughing again*  Gotta love politics..not!

So.. some of you know that there are a number of actors I adore… (we all have our share, so don’t go chuckling!)

One such person I have written about before…  his name is Roy Dotrice.

Many know him from the television series Beauty and the Beast.  Or maybe you saw Madigan Men, or maybe a movie or two?  (like: The Cutting Edge or Cheech & Chong’s Corsican Brothers)

Anyway…   I need something explained to me…  no, I mean it! .. really ! .. I don’t get it!… I know that I’m not the brightest bulb in the package but I truly do not get this at all!

I collect some things on actors I like... mostly their movies, but sometimes they write a book or a book comes out about them etc…  In this case, something I would like of Roy’s are books that he’s narrated.

Simple enough right?

Well, I must be living under a rock, because famous or not, popular or not, I need it explained to me why two such books that Roy narrated are so “freeking” high in price!!

They would be these two of 4 popular books… but… popular, to me doesn’t make them worth the prices I am seeing… and the prices listed here are the LOWEST!…

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)
Audio Cassette (Audiobook,Unabridged)    5 used & new from $212.38   Roy Dotrice (Reader)

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2)
Audio Cassette (Audiobook,Unabridged)    4 used & new from $198.79  Roy Dotrice (Narrated by)

…now compare those to the last two books of the same collection, that Roy DOES NOT narrate!

A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3)
Audio Cassette (Audiobook,Unabridged)    9 used & new from $48.73

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire)
Audio CD (Audiobook,Unabridged)  $65.00  $45.50 John Lee (Narrator)

Ok.. hurry up!  Explain it all to me!!   I need to know WHY I can’t even come close to affording to have these audio books!!  (I never collected audio books but I thought it would be great to have the ones Roy did… cha!)

After finding those books I am afraid to even look for any of the others he’s narrated!!!…  and I do love his voice! *sigh*

Books that Roy Narrated…

  • Watership Down
  • Robin Hood TV series –
  • The Prince and the Pauper
  • Batman – cartoon series
  • Death Gate Cycle Vol. 4: Serpent Mage
  • Three volumes of George RR Martin’s “A Song of Ice And Fire” with over 500 different characters!
  • Winnie the Pooh *Grammy Award Nomination*
  • The Misadventures of Benjamin Bartholomew Piff

and Disney’s…

  • The Little Mermaid
  • The Little Mermaid (Xmas Edition)
  • Pocahontas
  • The Hunting of the Snark
  • The Lion King
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Beautyand the Beast (Xmas Edition)

I did a dumb thing… I looked on the web anyway…

I AM SCREAMING!!! ARRGHHHH~!  I have spent about 2 hours searching the web to see if i can find the audio version of Watership Down read by Roy Dotrice to possibly buy, …since I know dang well I can’t afford The Game of Thrones!

Do you think I can find ANY?  *yeahrightsure!*

I found some sort of Download with stuff I don’t have on my computer and will not download from some place I don’t know…but to buy it?  nada.

Not even on ebay

I found one place that had an ISBN( 0600560589 )  number so I thought, “great!  this will help me find it!”… nada..

First it ticked me off... now I am getting downright depressed. *sniffle*sniffle*   I love you Roy… but I give up.  :o(

All I ask is a chance to prove that money can’t make me happy.
